Dominated by 11 districts and totaling 62 seats, Vidarbha is a pivotal region in the upcoming assembly election, with the competition between the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) intensifying. The BJP emerged as the primary force in the area in 2019, securing 29 seats, followed by Congress with 15, undivided NCP with six, and Shiv Sena with four. Smaller parties and independent candidates, including Prahar Janshakti, managed to secure five seats. With the recent splits within NCP and Shiv Sena along with the rise of independent candidates, Vidarbha is slated to be a key battleground this time around.
In East Vidarbha, encompassing six districts namely Nagpur, Wardha, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondia, and Bhandara, the BJP stronghold is encountering resistance due to internal conflicts and the resurgence of the MVA, challenging the dominance of the Mahayuti alliance. Nagpur, housing the highest number of significant political seats in the region, is witnessing high-stakes battles. While BJP won 11 seats in 2014, its count dropped to six in 2019. Congress aims to leverage anti-incumbency sentiment to regain control in the South and Central constituencies of Nagpur city, which it narrowly lost to the BJP previously. Additionally, the party is striving to strengthen its position in the Nagpur North and West seats, which it secured in 2019.
In rural Nagpur, Congress is emphasizing issues like farmer distress and local development, which posed challenges for the BJP in the last election. The BJP, on the other hand, is relying on the popularity of its local leaders and organizational strength to retain its existing seats.
The battle lines are drawn in Wardha as well, with BJP facing a tough challenge from Congress in the constituency. The Deoli constituency is expected to witness a contest between BJP and Congress or Shiv Sena (UBT), while in Hinganghat, BJP is gearing up to defend its position against NCP (Sharad Pawar). The contest in Arvi remains undecided. In Gadchiroli, internal conflicts within the BJP have made the tribal-dominated district politically sensitive. BJP MLA Dr. Deorao Holi has suggested that dissent within the party is growing. The MVA is making strong efforts to challenge the BJP, with NCP (Sharad Pawar) putting forward a formidable candidate, Bhagyashree Atram, in the Aheri seat against her father, Dharamrao Baba Atram of NCP (Ajit). The contest in Armori is poised to be a close battle between the Congress and BJP.
Chandrapur is expected to witness a fierce political showdown in its six constituencies, being an industrial hub and a stronghold for the BJP. In Chandrapur constituency, both Shiv Sena and BJP are vying for the support of independent MLA Kishor Jorgewar. BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar, who faced tough competition in the previous Lok Sabha election, is now encountering strong opposition in his hometown seat of Ballarpur. In Bramhapuri, Congress's Vijay Wadettiwar is eyeing a third consecutive term. The Warora seat, left vacant after the Congress MLA Pratibha Dhanorkar's victory in the LS polls, may be secured by Wadettiwar's daughter Shivani. Meanwhile, in Rajura, Congress MLA Subhash Dhote might face a challenge from a BJP candidate.
In Gondia, strategies are being finalized as Independent MLA Vinod Agrawal, now aligned with the BJP, is being contested by Congress's Gopaldas Agrawal. Vijay Rahangdale of the BJP will compete against Ravikant Bopche of NCP (Sharad Pawar) in Tiroda. The candidate for NCP (Ajit Pawar) in Arjuni Moragaon is yet to be confirmed. In Amgaon, Congress's Sasharam Korote is preparing for a tough match against an as yet undisclosed BJP candidate.
In Bhandara, conflicts are emerging between allies as all three constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Castes. Independent MLA Narendra Bhondekar, an ally of Shinde, is facing opposition within the BJP regarding his nomination. In Tumsar, NCP's Raju Karemore will confront his rival, former MLA Charan Waghmare, who is now affiliated with the NC.P (Sharad Pawar), along with Congress, is vying for the seat, adding to the intrigue in Sakoli where MPCC president Nana Patole is currently holding office. The district is expected to witness a close contest, with multiple BJP contenders competing for the ticket. The seat-sharing dilemma is complicating election strategies for the MVA in Western Vidarbha, which has traditionally been their stronghold but also saw BJP making inroads in recent elections. Internal disputes among Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena are further adding to the challenges. Amravati, a hotbed of political activity, is set for fierce electoral battles, especially in the main seat where Congress and NCP (Ajit Pawar) are vying for dominance, while smaller parties like MNS could influence the outcome. Yavatmal is witnessing a struggle for Congress to maintain its hold as BJP has made significant gains in the district, with five out of seven seats now under BJP's control. In Akola, a quadrangular contest is looming with Mahayuti, MVA, VBA, and Prahar Janshakti fielding strong candidates. Washim is gearing up for a triangular battle in Karanja and Risod constituencies. There is expected to be a triangular contest among Mahayuti, MVA, and VBA in the upcoming elections.
